Issue 01 : January 08
    Welcome
A warm welcome to our first e-newsletter which we hope you find both interesting and useful in keeping you up to date on events at Proteus and raising topical issues which may be relevant to your communications activity.

This year is a leap year and, in keeping with tradition, it is the rare occasion when etiquette allows women ask men to marry them. This role reversal could prove useful for some. We intend taking this principle one stage further by asking some highly desirable potential clients to take us on as their PR consultants!

2007 was a good year for Proteus with some significant business wins, challenging work and new team members. So please read on, and if you have any thoughts on what you would like to see in future editions, or simply want to give us some constructive feedback, we would be delighted to hear from you.

New business wins for Proteus

The last few months have been busy on the new business front for Proteus. The consultancy has recently been handed briefs by Robert Horne Group, the UK's largest paper, plastics and board merchant; Nampak Plastics, leading manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging; and TiTech, suppliers of materials sorting technology to recycling plants.

Proteus is working on a strategic communications plan for each organisation, as well as media relations and direct communications work to support commercial objectives.

Proteus also worked recently on a highly sensitive project with a major UK rail franchise. The consultancy was asked to advise senior management how best to communicate major changes to its services to all stakeholders. As part of this, Proteus developed a communications strategy and liaison programme.

Proteus in the news

More familiar with helping their clients make the news, Proteus found itself in the headlines before Christmas with an opinion article from MD Paul Davison on the importance of communications in the environmental sector. Here is an excerpt of the article that was published in 'Recycling and Waste World':

"The UK waste management industry is among the finest in the world, but it has a terrible reputation that doesn't do it justice. One reason for this apparent paradox is the way the UK waste management industry has communicated over the last 20 years… The current poor perception of the sector cannot be blamed on the biased attitudes of the media. It results from a lack of collective will to invest money in positive, pro-active communications."

    Review your communication needs
If the increasing number of requests for tenders and proposals from Proteus is anything to go by, financial pessimism is encouraging many businesses to review their current communications budgets to ensure they are getting maximum benefit.

In recognition of this increasing trend, Proteus is offering potential new clients a free review meeting to discuss previous communications activities and to test potential future areas of communications activity. This ‘micro audit’ takes the form of a face to face meeting, which would allow Proteus to give you an objective assessment of:
  • Comms implications of business strategy
  • Review of key issues
  • Potential strategic options
  • Creative comms suggestions
If you are interested in a 'micro audit' please contact Paul on pauld@proteuspr.co.uk
    Environmental News
As a business which conducts an enormous amount of environment focused communications, Proteus has radically extended its own environmental policy to include:
  • Going for ISO 14001, the environmental management standard,
  • A detailed carbon reduction programme,
  • A public transport first policy, and
  • Responsibly off-setting all remaining carbon emissions from 1st January 2008.
Proteus will also ensure that it always offers clients an environmentally preferred solution to their communications activities. As part of this process, Proteus recently negotiated preferred printing rates for its clients from one of the UK’s premier environmentally friendly print companies, and is hoping to secure a similar arrangement with paper and display providers.
    Proteus strengthens its team
Zoë March has recently joined the Proteus consultancy team. Zoë brings experience of high-profile stakeholder liaison and planning support in the energy and environmental sectors, as well as projects in construction and regeneration. At Proteus, Zoë works with a variety of clients, providing media relations and broader public relations consultancy services, as well as supporting Paul with CIPR proceedings.

As well as her PR acumen, Zoë brings her sense of humour and love of her native Cornwall to Proteus.
